As depicted in The Spirit in the Stick by Neil Duffy, Native Americans were known to carve symbols β each carrying deep personal significance to the player β into their lacrosse sticks. Each of the stewards of the stick in the story β including some of the Game's all-time greats β carve a symbol with special meaning into the stick as they pass it along.
As we approach the momentous inclusion of lacrosse in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, please help the entire lacrosse community come together in the Spirit of the Game by submitting the carving you might inscribe on the stick in our "Around the World Spirit in the Stick Carving" project.
The simple question posed at the end of the book: "If you had the stick right now and were about to pass it on, what would your carving be and why?"
Everyone can participate regardless of "artistic ability" β many carvings are simple letters, stick figures or text! The author is grateful to the hundreds of students and many legends of the Game who provided carvings dating back nearly two decades β many of which appear here.
Please share with your friends, teams, and social media. What would your carving be? π₯
